Due to the COVID-19 situation and the subsequent restrictions of some countries, some schools are unable to hire teachers from overseas at this point. However, this is only a temporary measure and some schools are still planning ahead, so please get in touch with us if you have any concerns or questions, we’re happy to assist.

At this moment, it’s difficult to predict how long containment measures will be in place globally, or what further restrictions may be imposed, a number of governments have issued entry restrictions, visa suspensions and quarantine measures for travellers. The below table outlines these restrictions by country.

Travel restrictions

China>> Entry restrictions

  • Foreign nationals with visas issued before 28 March 2020 are not permitted to enter China.
  • Foreign nationals with residence permits or APEC
  • Business Travel Cards are not permitted to enter China

Entry restriction exemption

  • Foreigners holding diplomatic, service, courtesy or C visas
  • Foreign nationals coming to China for necessary economic, trade, scientific or technological activities; foreign nationals arriving for emergency humanitarian needs may apply for visas at Chinese embassies / consulates
  • Foreign nationals with visas issued on or after 28 March 2020

Transit restrictions

  • Passengers are no longer permitted to transit through Beijing Capital International Airport and Xiamen Airport.

Visa restrictions

All visa free transit services have been suspended. This includes the:

  • 24/72/144-hour visa free transit policy
  • Hainan 30-day visa-free policy
  • 15-day visa-free policy for foreign cruise-group-tours through Shanghai Port
  • Guangdong 144-hour visa-free policy for foreign tour groups from Hong Kong or Macao SAR
  • Guangxi 15-day visa-free policy for foreign tour groups from ASEAN countries

Additionally, the visa exemption policy is suspended to nationals of Japan, Singapore and Brunei

Quarantine measures

  • All passengers, regardless of nationality, will be subject to the latest quarantine policies
Japan>> Entry restrictions

Passengers who meet one or more of the following criteria are not permitted to enter Japan:

  • Nationals of China (People’s Republic of China) with a passport issued in Hubei Province or Zhejiang Province

Foreign nationals who have visited one or more of the following destinations in the past 14 days are not permitted to enter Japan:

  • Brunei, China (including Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR* and Macao SAR), Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Republic of Korea (South Korea), Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam
  • Australia, New Zealand
  • Canada, United States of America
  • Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Dominica, Panama
  • Albania, Andorra, Armenia. Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Vatican
  • Bahrain, Israel, Iran, Turkey
  • Cote d’lvoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Mauritius, Morocco

*Subject to Hong Kong government’s prevailing restrictions for transiting through Hong Kong, foreign nationals may transit Hong Kong to Japan if they have not been to any of the above countries – and will be required to take a COVID-19 test and undergo 14 days of quarantine in a hotel.

Quarantine requirements

All passengers will be subject to 14 days of quarantine at a location designated by the quarantine station chief, and are not permitted to use public transportation.

Visa restrictions

Single and multiple-entry visas issued before 8 March 2020 by Japanese Embassies to China nationals (including Hong Kong and Macao SAR) have been suspended. For the full list of visa suspensions and the affected countries/regions, please refer to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan

Korea>> Entry restrictions

Passengers who meet one or more of the following criteria are not permitted to enter South Korea:

  • Travelling on a People’s Republic of China passport that lists Hubei province as the place of issue
  • Travelling on any type of visa issued by the Korean Consulate in Wuhan
  • Have visited the Hubei province in the past 14 days
  • Nationals of Japan who do not hold a Korean visa issued on or after 9 March 2020

Entry restriction exemptions

  • South Korean citizens, permanent residents, spouses and direct family members are permitted to enter

Additional entry requirements

All passengers travelling from Hong Kong or Macao must travel with a functioning mobile phone and contactable phone number (hotel number not accepted). On arrival, local quarantine or immigration officials will verify the passenger’s contact number. If the verification process is unsuccessful, the passenger will be denied entry into Korea.

Quarantine measures

  • All passengers arriving in South Korea are required to undergo quarantine for 14 days upon entry.
  • Foreigners with short-term visas or without a domestic residence are subject to quarantine at a government facility, at the expense of KRW1,400,000.
  • All passengers should install the “Self-Diagnosis Mobile app” upon entering Korea.

Visa restrictions

  • Visa waiver programme for Indonesian passport holders and passengers travelling to Jeju (CJU) on a People’s Republic of China passport has been suspended

Macao SAR

Entry restrictions

Only the following passengers are permitted to enter Macao:

  • Macao SAR passport holders
  • Macao SAR identity card holders
  • Nationals of the People’s Republic of China with a Macao SAR travel permit
  • Passengers with a visit permit for residents of Macao SAR
  • Passengers holding a valid travel document/visa with a validity period of more than 14 days
  • Residents of Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan
Taiwan>> Entry restrictions

  • Foreign nationals are not permitted to enter Taiwan.
  • From 24 March (00:00 CST) to 30 April 2020, no passengers are permitted to transit through Taiwan.

Entry restriction exemptions

Passengers who meet one or more of the following criteria are permitted to enter Taiwan but will be required to undergo a compulsory 14-day self-imposed quarantine immediately upon arrival:

  • Residents of Taiwan
  • Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) holders
  • Diplomatic passport holders or on official business fulfilling commercial and contractual obligations
  • Foreign nationals with special permission to enter

Quarantine measures

  • All eligible passengers entering Taiwan must undergo 14 days of home quarantine

Visa restrictions

  • Visa on arrival services and online applications have been suspended for Hong Kong SAR passport holders and Macao SAR passport holders.
Thailand>> All flights to Thailand have been suspended until 19 April 2020 (00:00 ICT).
Vietnam>> Entry restrictions

  • Foreign nationals are not permitted to enter Vietnam
  • All flights to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi are suspended until 15 April 2020
  • Flights from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi are unaffected

Entry restriction exemptions

  • Passengers travelling on diplomatic passports

Additional entry requirements

  • All Vietnamese passport holders must contact their local Vietnam embassy for approval before returning to Vietnam. (Not applicable to passengers transiting through airports in Vietnam)

Quarantine measures

The following passengers are required to undergo 14 days of facility quarantine immediately upon arrival:

  • Passengers who have visited or transited through Iran
  • Vietnamese nationals who have been to the United Kingdom or one of the 26 Schengen countries in the last 14 days
  • Foreign nationals who have been to the United Kingdom, one of the 26 Schengen countries or ASEAN countries in the last 14 days
  • All ASEAN passport holders

Foreign nationals that hold a visa exemption booklet and are not required to undergo the compulsory quarantine, or are entering Vietnam under the visa waiver programme, are required to show a health certificate indicating a negative test result for COVID-19.

Visa restrictions

The visa waiver programme has been suspended for the following nationals:

  • South Korea
  • Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom

Visa on arrival services have been suspended for all foreign nationals even if they are holding a visa on arrival approval letter

Visa exemption has been suspended for Vietnamese or family members of Vietnamese holding foreign passports
